Had I the fabric of the night,

entwined with the constellation’s stars,

the black and the purple and the grey night,

of crabs and dogs and belts of stars;

I would lay that cloth on the grass:

so as we could lay on it together;

but now we do not lay on just grass:

for now it is the universe, together.

Inspired by Yeats:

Had I the heaven’s embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light;
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
