I want to be holy. But not in a holier-than-thou sort of way. I want to be just as holy as the next guy– but by guy I specifically mean someone who goes to church.
Because all of the people I know who go to church are fun to hang out with. And yeah, I know people who don’t go to church who are also fun to be around, but there’s something about these church go-ers– some kind of halo, some kind of aura– that I have an affinity for. And so what if they don’t end up going every Sunday? I barely know the difference. But if they can calmly explain to me what a holy communion is without laughing at me for not knowing in the first place, that’s the kind of holy I want to be.
I don’t need followers. I have friends, and they might identify as followers, but any of them can do anything they want at any time and we all know it. So I want to be holy, but not even the holiest. I just want to dip my toes in that water and see how it feels.
And if I like it, then great. If I don’t, I’m back to square one. Listen, I just want some kind of religion. I don’t know what it is yet, but if you’re passionate about it, chances are I will be too.
(And if you’re reading this, maybe you should invite me to church sometime and explain to me what everything is. You might have to repeat yourself a few times, but trust me, I’m interested.)
